Biography Dr. Matt Zinter is a pediatric critical care physician specializing in the care of children with life-threatening illness and complex medical conditions, including cancer, immune disorders, and those undergoing stem cell transplantation or cellular therapies. He serves as Program Director for Pediatric Immunocompromised Critical Care at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals.

His clinical work is closely integrated with a research program focused on understanding respiratory failure in critically ill children. His laboratory investigates how lung injury, infection, and immune dysfunction contribute to impaired breathing, with a particular emphasis on the lung microbiome and pathways of inflammation and tissue stress.

Through partnerships with patients, families, and multidisciplinary collaborators, Dr. Zinter’s research aims to advance precision diagnostics and develop novel therapeutic strategies to improve outcomes for children with severe lung disease and other critical illnesses.
Education Zinter earned his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at UCSF.
